How to play Tangram

Read the aim of Tangram, then make your first move. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Check the rule before repeating the action. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
