How to play Peg Solitaire

Peg Solitaire gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Look at what changes after your first action. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Use the example below to understand a decision.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
